Vitiligo Treatments and Causes

Vitiligo is a skin disorder in which cells that produce melanin (pigment) are destroyed, this result in white patches on the skin. These patches can appear anywhere on the body, which may vary in size and can be just one spot or several. Sometimes the hair on the affected areas may also turn white.

What causes vitiligo is still a question because its causes are currently unknown but doctors and researchers offer several different theories for its cause. Inheritance is thought to be one of its cause and some particular genes is thought to be responsible for it. Another theory infers that a single event like severe physical or mental trauma causes this disease. These all reasons do not have any solid evidence that supports them.

Up till now no cure for vitiligo has been discovered. Some regimentation treatments are available that can help in making the skin look uniform in color. Most of the treatments available for repigmentation are topical. Topical steroid creams are found good in repigmenting the skin but if used in the initial stages. Steroids are found harmful for the skin if used for a longer period.

Psoralen photochemotherapy is one of the best treatment options for vitiligo. It is a combination of psoralen and ultra violet light. Psoralen sensitizes the skin and the ultra violet light tans the sensitized skin to regain pigment.

Skin grafts are the latest surgical treatments for vitiligo. In these treatments either the skin or the melanocytes are transferred from normally pigmented area of the skin to the affected area.

Herbal treatments are also found good in returning the lost pigment. Herbal treatments are based on natural herbs. It is believed that this this treatment starts showing repigmentation result in a fortnight.

Tattooing is another treatment option for vitiligo, in this treatment artificial pigment is transposed into the affected skin to match the normally pigmented skin.
